Massage Therapy Vancouver

What is a massage?

Massage is the physical act of rubbing, applying direct pressure, and kneading the body, typically using the hands as therapeutic tools. There are several types of massages that focus on various parts of the body depending on where a patient needs treatment, and this is done by selecting one healing approach out of the many different ones available. Throughout a massage, a registered massage therapist will apply gentle or strong pressure depending on what is needed, to the muscles and joints of the body, to help alleviate stress, pain, discomfort, and tension. A massage therapist is a professional who is well trained and educated in the practice, to give massages to patients.

Orthopedic

Well known as one of the most powerful deep tissue massage therapies available, and designed as an effective compliment to physiotherapy treatments, this type of massage therapy focuses on specific parts of the body using acupressure, trigger points, myofascial, and soft tissue mobilizing to alleviate muscle pain, discomfort, and tension. It increases flexibility and range of motion, and supports your current physical therapy treatment. By applying significant pressure to the body, this type of massage targets the deep layers of muscles and connective tissues to stretch the structures, and release adhesions/bands of rigid muscle, also known as knots. It promotes the circulation of oxygen and nutrients to the muscle, decreases the amount of metabolic waste in the muscle that causes pain, and reduces the limited range of motion that prevents healing.

Limelight Wellness has designed an orthopedic massage therapy series that addresses specific muscle imbalances associated with joint injury and pain. And all from our friendly, comfortable, and relaxing environment.

Swedish massage

Swedish massage is essentially a gentle type of full-body massage that’s ideal for people who are sensitive to touch, have a lot of tension, and are relatively new to massage therapy. This is an excellent choice if you want to have full relaxation during the massage, while helping to release stubborn muscle knots from head to toe. Your Swedish massage therapist will use a combination of actions including deep circular motions, long strokes in the direction of the heart, kneading, tapping and vibration, and passive joint movement techniques. This type of massage typically lasts for 60 to 90 minutes depending on how much treatment your body and mind require.

Prenatal massage

This fantastic type of massage is a safe way for women to get a relaxing massage during pregnancy. Prenatal massage can really help to alleviate body aches related to pregnancy, reduce stress, and ease muscle tension. The great thing about this type of massage, is that you can get one at any point in time throughout your pregnancy months, except the first trimester carries some level of miscarriage risk, so many massage companies will not offer service during this time, and women are encouraged to refrain from massage until the second trimester when the risks are dramatically lower.

Prenatal massage uses gentle pressure similar to that of Swedish massage. The therapist focuses on impacted areas such as your lower back, hips, and legs. During the massage you lie on either of your sides to not put pressure on your stomach, or face down on a specially designed table with a cutout area to safely house your belly. 30 to 60 minutes is a typical length of massage for pregnant women.
